Green Spaces is New York City’s sustainable coworking space for startups, entrepreneurs, and others who enjoy working happily while improving the world. Members from diverse and overlapping fields make us NYC’s networking hotspot for the eco-minded. I’m Marissa Feinberg, Green Spaces co-founder, marketing and PR media whisperer, and rapid dot connector. See my recent interview about Green Spaces on Mashable.

Idea Bounce goes digital!

Each Wednesday, members gather for the Green Spaces “Idea Bounce,” also known as “startup therapy with dumplings,” to get to know each other better and share news. Then, one person or company introduces a challenge they’re facing, and the group bounces ideas, recommending strategies and contacts. I’ll be sharing some of what we discover on this blog.

How to launch in a new market

At a recent Idea Bounce we brainstormed with Odile Beniflah, Senior Product Manager at carpooling.com. The company is the word’s largest carpooling network with 3.7 million users in Europe, where the concept has caught on almost ubiquitously.

Carpooling.com rides to the US. Beep beep!

The U.S. market is carpooling.com’s next frontier, and it’s a challenge. With exceptions of some major cities, the ability to drive wherever and whenever is part of the American Dream! We all like to control the radio! (More on carpooling.com and American resistance to carpooling.)

So, Odile asks, how should carpooling.com woo the American market?

Don’t canvas; dig deep

Tie the U.S. launch of carpooling.com to specific events or communities, with giveaways and promotions, rather than use a broad campaign approach. Making alliances with local partners is crucial (one idea that kept bouncing back).

Why not sponsor a conference, so people can find carpools via carpooling.com during the registration process? This came up when we realized another person in the room and I were both headed to this week’s Conscious Capitalism conference in Boston. Bummer I already booked Amtrak!

What if there’s a carpooling.com widget on an airport’s website? What if carpooling.com spread the word around college campuses when students are making plans to go home for the holidays? Organizations that encourage ride sharing will get value with the convenience and differentiator of offering carpooling.com’s service.

Get a tour guide

The first thing I do when I’m headed someplace I’ve never been is figure this out: Who do I know there who knows what’s there? And then I give them a great host gift. New markets aren’t un-penetrated; it’s just not yet been done by you.

Green Spacers went into bundling mode, brainstorming what kind of partner service could work with carpooling.com. Where else do savvy, mobile, educated, social, and eco-conscious people, aka carpooling.com’s target market, go? There’s couchsurfing.org, there’s airbnb.com. There’s okcupid.com (maybe a campaign about making it easier to date people in other cities?) and what if Facebook users could post to their feed the destination, enjoyability, and pictures of their latest trip? How about celebrities showing up at red carpet events in carpooling.com carpools? (Okay, Odile didn’t love all of our ideas here, but that’s why we bounce them around first!)

It isn’t just about YOUR brand

Carpooling.com has a friendly, sensible feel. The website is minimalist, gently suggesting that “being on the road can be cheap, green, and fun.”

But as Odile put it, it isn’t just carpooling.com’s personality that’s important here. The company aims, essentially, to change the way people think about their transportation and mobility.

It’s a huge challenge for sure, but deep diving into the customer mindset — and culture — is key to understanding the marketplace. We might need a couple more Idea Bounces and platters of dumplings for this one…

The findings enable marketers to understand the “Green Gap”, the discrepancy between stated intention and behavior when it comes to living sustainably, offer solutions on how to close the Green Gap and reveal the opportunities that exist for the brands who are able to change consumer behavior.

Treehugger Founder Graham Hill recently held a competition to redesign his humble abode. Called “LifeEdited”, the platform is where crowdsourcing meets efficiency and design for living. Case and point, Graham’s NYC apartment. Pictured above, the winning design makes the best of 400 square feet of Graham’s Manhattan real estate. This fall, the winning design will become reality.

However, this initiative is about much more than city life. In his PopTech! talk, Graham talks about the desire to build a duplicable model for a cleaner lifestyle. We’re talking digitization, simplification and justification of what’s within our live-able environment, and making sure it’s needed. A lot like a movement, LifeEdited shows that it’s possible to feel more free with less.

Lucid Dreaming Book Could Help Develop Creativity

FROM PSFK blog: ‘Oneironautics: A Field Guide to Lucid Dreaming’ is a featured project currently on Kickstarter, and one driven to provide every sleeping beauty with a manual to further explore ‘the experience of being consciously awake but in a dream.’ Eager to raise funds to produce a 160 page book, the writers, aim to provide all the necessary information to teach you how to control the inner corners of your dreams which can unlock insight into our conscious mental states. Better considered as a version of virtual reality, one that you can navigate, the book could have profound impacts for creative individuals. The notion of ‘it came to me in a dream’ could be applicable on an everyday basis – some of the world’s greatest paintings, musical compositions, stores and even scientific discoveries from thousands of years have been rooted in the creators’ dreams. With lucid dreaming allowing for infinite adventures where you are the maestro, the Oneironautics guide could push boundaries to provide better clarity on everyday thought behavior and idea development.
It’s spring (sortof) and almost summer, so I asked my green fashion expert friend Emma Grady where to shop. She opened my eyes to Ecouterre’s recommendations. From Barney’s to Kaight, and more, I am happy to have an up-to-date list.

Emma says, “There’s Rogan (on Bowery) and Barneys would be the top department store, they sell Loomstate as well as Rogan and other artisan labels. There’s also a second hand shop - Buffalo Exchange which has some great stuff. What I have handy is a list of online shops (via Ecouterre)”:

Read on to learn of our findings…

Presentation and discussion hosted by the Brooklyn Bridge Forest and Green Leaders Global
Green Spaces, 394 Broadway, New York NY
March 16, 2011

· Introduction - Scott Francisco
· EcoMadera - Peter Pinchot
· Patagonia Sur - Divya Mankikar
· TerraMai, Reclaimed Woods - Andy Kjellgren
· Brooklyn Bridge Forest - Scott Francisco
· Group Discussion

The “Is Wood Good?” event was a great success. Many thanks to Green Spaces and everyone who attended. A video recording of event highlights will be available soon through Facebook.

The evening began with introductory remarks by Scott Francisco of Brooklyn Bridge Forest. He started by raising the question about criteria for sustainability in terms of architecture and building materials, using a quote from Peter Buchanan’s Ten Shades of Green.

“…Green design is not only about energy efficiency…it involves a whole nexus of interrelated issues, the social, cultural, psychological and economic dimensions of which are as important as the technical and ecological… ‘Ten shades’ refers to ten key issues that need to be considered to create a fully green architecture: 1.low energy/high performance, 2. replenishable sources; 3. recycling; 4.embodied energy; 5.long life, loose fit; 6.total life cycle costing; 7.embedded in place; 8. access and urban context; 9.health and happiness; and 10.community and connection. “

Scott went on to describe “embodied energy” and the difference in the energy embodied in wood compared to other common building materials:

“…The common building material with least embodied energy is wood, with about 640 kilowatt-hours per ton (most of it consumed by the industrial drying process.) Hence the greenest building material is wood from sustainably managed forests. Brick is the material with the next lowest amount of embodied energy, (4X) that of wood, then concrete (5 X), plastic (6X), glass (14X), steel (24X) and aluminum (126X).

Scott then introduced the first presenter, Peter Pinchot, who spoke of his EcoMadera project. This project in Ecuador is protecting forests from agricultural expansion by creating economic alternatives for local communities through a new business venture. Ecomadera is a multifaceted forest business based on a mix of forest products such as plantation Balsa and limited harvesting of old growth hardwoods strategically extracted without the creation of new roads. Peter emphasized the need to balance the harvest of tree species that reflect the diversity of the forest. Ecomadera has developed a hardwood flooring product that combines several wood species to encourage this diversification.

Next we learned from Divya Mankikar about Patagonia Sur’s success in reforesting large areas of degraded pasture in Chile’s Patagonia region. This business has successfully created massive reserves of existing and recently planted forest. This effort is sustained by a for-profit business model that mixes ecotourism, carbon offsets, and sustainable land development. Patagonia Sur’s success has been made possible through a combination of local stakeholder involvement and investment from developed global economies.

We also heard from Andy Kjellgren of TerraMai, a company that specializes in the reclamation and re-use of wood as a means of extending the material’s life cycle. Terra Mai is particularly focused on reclamation of tropical hardwood. Andy cited several projects which exemplify his company’s business model, including, most notably, the latest phase of the High Line decking, which was built from reclaimed teak rather than the old-growth ipe used in the first phase of construction. He also presented ideas for re-use of the wood that will be salvaged from the Brooklyn Bridge boardwalk. Potential uses include down-cycling the wood into city projects like benches and other exterior applications which could create local employment and new cottage industries.

Scott Francisco began the Brooklyn Bridge Forest presentation with the new mission statement, refined through ongoing research and conversation with collaborators, critics and advisors: The BBF mission is to create a global landmark in rainforest conservation by leveraging the prominence of the Brooklyn Bridge boardwalk to secure sponsorship funds, research support and oversight partnerships. Local community stakeholders are considered to be critical partners in economic, educational and social dimensions of the project. Global “transparency” was also emphasized as a critical mission of the project; i.e., how can the Brooklyn Bridge Forest help to build world-wide awareness of real life long-term environmental impacts of consumption? It was also stressed that the Brooklyn Bridge Forest is based on the educational and research potential of a ‘bounded’ land area that will be used to study long-term impacts of the forestry model as well as provide opportunities to visit an actual place that provides the wood for the Brooklyn Bridge.

Discussion
Following these presentations the discussion lasted past 10pm, interspersed with wine, cheese and snacks. We heard from a wide variety of participants in the conversation. Tim Keating from Rainforest Relief led with questions to the panel on the assumptions of sustainability, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. This in turn led to a much more detailed conversation about the relationship between different tree species, forest ecosystems, wood quality and outdoor service lifespan of old growth versus young/plantation species. While there were many different and sometimes conflicting viewpoints, it was generally agreed that a holistic view was the only way to assess the benefits and potential pitfalls of any particular model, and that “long term impacts” were the ultimate test of success.

Questions and comparisons were raised between tropical species and domestic species such as black locust. (It was noted that this wood has been used recently in NYC with mixed results.) Tim Keating asked: why not use the BBF project to cultivate a domestic forest (eg black locust) to supply material needs, and thus preserve an acreage of untouched rainforest? The answer from Scott Francisco was that the BBF project is not simply about finding the most sustainable material for the boardwalk, but rather about advancing rainforest conservation. It was raised that the primary value of the BBF project was to fund a visible and sustainable example of rainforest protection at a global level, a bulwark at the frontier of rainforest destruction, and that the project must be scalable and/or catalyze other change. The financial resources that the Brooklyn Bridge Forest unlocks should be used strategically in the area of greatest need for long term rainforest protection.

Other strategies discussed included: architectural design focused on sustainability, reforestation, well-managed timber harvest and valuable timber products, forest certification and sourcing certified products, carbon offset projects that reward conservation, increased indigenous ownership and governance of forests, and taking pressure off tropical forests by recycling wood and utilizing North American species to serve North American markets.

Conclusion: With many different viewpoints, organizations and fields of expertise represented the event was lively, and productive. Speakers and audience represented a wide range of valid strategies for addressing the threats to tropical forests and the communities within them. Many new connections were made with opportunities for follow up. It was widely agreed that this was a rare opportunity to bring proponents of different strategies into a common dialog and to see how we fit into a larger picture of sustainability.

Our next event will follow a similar format, but we intend to address new themes and topics. We hope to recruit another line-up of interesting contributors, and gather at a larger venue. Please make sure you are on our mailing list to get the next event notification!

Invite from Meryl Streep

Why is Hollywood royalty sending ME snail mail?
In response to the disaster in Japan, we are currently working closely with national agencies to determine when and how to facilitate product delivery to the affected areas. While relief workers are currently providing water, food and medical needs, it is time to start working on the next phase of this tragedy, procuring heavyweight men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, basics, such as underwear and socks, as well as home products such as blankets, sheets and towels. Reports show that the cold weather has increased the hardship for disaster victims and rescuers. Some victims have been exposed to cold weather and water, in some cases for days. Conditions are expected to worsen with temperatures forecast to drop below freezing across portions of the earthquake zone. Please consider gathering appropriate apparel and home goods to donate through Fashion Delivers Charitable Foundation.

Contribution of product can be coordinated by e-mailing us at donations@fashiondelivers.org or calling Fashion Delivers at 646-786-2680.

As many of you know, it is very costly to ship goods to Japan so we are currently doing our homework to find a way partner with another distribution agency or freight provider to facilitate the delivery and/or absorb these costs; like we did with Operation Compassion during our Haiti relief efforts. During this time as our role remains unclear, it is important for us to be prepared to deliver when and if we are able to secure the aforementioned. That said, we ask all of you, our amazing brand ambassadors, to keep us top of mind when working with potential partners who can help us raise funds and product.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me to brainstorm, find answers to your questions and or connect us with the appropriate persons.

All the best,

We’re thrilled and honored to be included in this piece.

“Breeding Better Business - How incubators are providing more to local entrepreneurs than just a space to work”

March 1, 2010 by Lindsay Tigar

Amidst the 2009 economic meltdown, New York City Mayor Bloomberg announced his plan to promote business innovation and entrepreneurship to help stimulate the market. One item on this agenda was to support business incubators.

Across the area, incubators—whether they are city-funded or not—serve as money- savers for entrepreneurs, as well as a melting pot of different ideas and innovations. The incubators offer everything a typical shared office does—desks, conference rooms, receptionist areas, kitchens, and more—but the tenants are grouped together with the intention of supporting each other and sparking growth.

Green Spaces

Office Rent: $550/month for full-time companies.

Two business owners, Jennie Nevin and Marissa Feinberg, created Green Spaces for social- and sustainability-minded entrepreneurs. With office alternatives in New York and Colorado, and one soon to open in Los Angeles, Green Spaces offers part-time, fulltime, and drop-in options, as well as conference rooms, an intern program, newsletter advertising, and recommended vendors and services.

Since 2009, when the incubator moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan, Green Spaces has offered hundreds of entrepreneurs green tools, like reclaimed furniture, efficient energy providers, and an Ecopreneurs Clubhouse program, which features each business nationwide through its newsletter and website. In its 5,300 square-foot space in TriBeCa, Green Spaces houses a range of businesses, including the Gotham Greens, which now has a sustainable rooftop greenhouse in Queens because of a $400,000 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and $1 million from private investors.

In the past two and half years since Green Spaces’ inception, I have never believed more in coworking.

There’s something special in the physics of many people coming together in one, central location. Each of us is moving our own ball forward, and we do it together.

For example, this week, I had a call scheduled about opening a Green Spaces in another east-coast city. Five minutes before that call was taking place, I received another call about opening a Green Spaces in the same city!

I’m not one to believe in anything other than what can scientifically be proven. So, what is it about different energies coming together that creates constant coincidences and synergies like this? Does anyone know? There must be a logical explanation.
